For the first time in three years we had a proper summer holiday which was
just that – a holiday. I know you’ll be thinking ‘Hang on, haven’t you been on lots of holidays already?’ This was a chance to sit in the sun, go for a swim and not worry about trying to pack in a bunch of sightseeing. So unlike the usual short breaks we take this was purely a relaxation holiday.
After a bit of time researching all the deals on offer we decided upon the
island of Rhodes, Greece. What a great decision that turned out to be, we had a fabulous 5 star resort, the beach just across the road and perfect weather. Since we went at the end of the peak season the place wasn’t over run with fellow holiday makers. So there was plenty of space by the pool and in the restaurants.
In terms of sightseeing we managed a half day in Old Rhodes town before succumbing to the heat and retreating to the pool for a swim and refreshing beer. The other and main excursion of ours was a time trip to Marmaris in Turkey which was a two hour boat trip away. We had fun exploring the markets, waterfront and generally soaking up as much sun as we could. Within reason anyway as it was bloody hot. The markets were interesting and we managed to spend a bit of money buying a Turkish rug. Marmaris was a little disappointing for the fact it's a resort town set up for the english tourist which was really dominant to the expense of the local culture. Pity really. Rhodes was like that too. English pubs showing UK TV and serving english food. Begs the question why the poms bother going away at all.
